Data is stored only on this device (browser local storage). Export CSV to keep a permanent copy or analyze in Excel/Minitab. Std Dev is sample (n−1); %CV = Ο/mean.
Stat guide
A quick refresher β what each number means and why it matters in a study. Rules of thumb are guides, not specs.
Central tendency
n β sample size
Number of observed cycles or element reads. Larger n tightens your estimate of the true mean and Ο. Manual time-study rule of thumb: 10β20 cycles, more when variation is high or the cycle is short.
Mean (xΜ)
xΜ = Ξ£x / n
The average. Basis for normal time and standard time. Sensitive to outliers β a single jam or fumble pulls it up.
Median
middle value (50th percentile)
The middle observation, robust to outliers. If the mean sits well above the median, the data is right-skewed (a few long cycles) β chase those special causes rather than trusting the average.
Spread / variation
Min & Max
Best and worst observed cycles. Min approximates entitlement β the best repeatable time. Max usually flags an abnormality (jam, reach, interruption) worth a root-cause look.
Range (R)
R = max β min
Fast measure of spread and the basis of the XΜβR control chart. A wide range means an inconsistent method β a standard-work opportunity.
Std Dev (Ο, sample)
s = β( Ξ£(x β xΜ)Β² / (n β 1) )
The core measure of variation around the mean. The nβ1 divisor (Bessel's correction) makes s an unbiased estimate of the process Ο from a sample. Feeds confidence intervals and capability indices.
%CV β coefficient of variation
CV = s / xΜ Γ 100
Relative variation, unit-free β lets you compare consistency across tasks of very different durations. Field rule of thumb: <10% tight, 10β25% moderate, >25% high (standardize the method). A guide, not a control limit.
Study concepts
Cycle time
Time for one complete cycle β all elements, or one machine cycle. Compare to takt (the customer demand rate) and to your best repeatable cycle (entitlement) to size the gap.
Pareto & cumulative %
80/20 β sort elements by total time, descending
Ranks elements by total active time so you attack the "vital few" first. The cumulative line shows where you pass ~80% of the time β everything left of that point is where the opportunity lives.
Spaghetti / motion
Total distance & steps
Operator or material travel per routine. Multiply by daily repetitions to size the prize. Targets Motion (people) and Transportation (material) β 2 of the 8 wastes.
Legs, crossings & revisits
A leg is one trip between two stations. Path crossings and revisits to the same station signal backtracking and poor flow β aim for one-directional, U- or I-shaped layouts and point-of-use storage.
Note: these summarize what you measured. They describe capability only once the process is stable β confirm stability on the run chart (no trends/shifts) before drawing capability conclusions.
